In 1965, Victorian Cytology Service
(VCS) was founded as a joint initiative of the State Government
and the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria. Its establishment
marked the commencement of cervical screening for the women of
Victoria. This was a period of excitement as for the
first time there was real hope that cancer could be prevented.
From humble beginnings, VCS rapidly expanded to become a large
highly respected laboratory, both in Australia and internationally.
Until 1991, VCS was located at Prince Henry's Hospital. With
the closure of this facility, VCS moved to purpose-built
accommodation in the Royal Women's Hospital precinct in Carlton.
The laboratory now employs in excess of 100 staff. There are
active training programs for scientists and cytopathologists.
VCS has an international reputations of its quality assurance
initiatives and its research.
The impressive decrease in the incidence and mortality from cervical
cancer among Victorian women represents our greatest achievement.
