Information for Practices

+. NHMRC Guidelines Summary Sheet || +. Consumables ||

A government funded pathology laboratory, Victorian Cytology Service (VCS) is primarily responsible for reporting cervical cytology tests. It is the largest single laboratory reporting Pap tests in Australia, examining approximately 280,000 Pap smears per year. This represents approximately half of all  smears taken annually in Victoria.

VCS also provides a pathology service for the reporting of histological (biopsy) specimens such as cervical biopsies, small surgical biopsies, skin etc. We also offer a non-gynaecological cytology service examining fine needle aspiration biopsies, urine and sputum samples, effusions, and other endoscopically obtained samples. Both of these services may be bulk-billed. For information regarding referral of specimens,  please contact us on 9250 0300.

Pap smears will be reported for all registered medical practitioners and for credentialed nurses.  Histology specimens and non-gynaecological cytology specimens will be reported for all registered medical practitioners.  Anyone wishing to use the Service (either as a practitioner or as a patient) is welcome to contact us on (03) 9250 0300. Ask to speak to our Director, our Liaison Physician or our Client Services Manager.
