Notes |
Techniques |
1. Eversion: take care to sample the edge of the eversion.
This is the squamocolumnar junction
where the columnar epithelium of the endocervical canal meets
the squamous epithelium of the vagina. It is the area where
cell changes occur.
2. Pregnancy: do not use the Cytobrush
(endocervical brush) there is a remote
chance that it could cause membrane
damage.
3. After taking the sample, fix the slide immediately.
Preferably within 4
seconds: definitely no longer than 30
seconds. The cells "expand" if they are
not fixed promptly and might appear
falsely abnormal.
4. If adding a ThinPrep sample, use the Cervex Sampler,
or a plastic spatula. A wooden spatula should not be used.
When you agitate the instrument(s) in
the ThinPrep fluid you are trying to release as many cells
as possible: cells seem to stick less to the plastic than
the wooden spatula.
