What is a ThinPrep?
ThinPrep is the commercial name for a liquid-based method of laboratory
preparation of a Pap smear.
When Should it be used?
You might want to add ThinPrep to your conventional smear
for:
- Anxious women who might be reassured by a second screening test.
- Women with evident excessive mucus, discharge or blood present.
- Women with recurrent "inflammatory" smears or unsatisfactory
smears due to a
lack of cells.
- Women who request the test.
How much does it cost?
ThinPrep costs $36. VCS will directly bill the woman. Remember
to write her
address on the request form, and to ask her to sign to acknowledge
that she
knows she will be sent an account.
Which instruments to
use?
For a ThinPrep sample, use the
Cervex Sampler Broom, or plastic spatula plus cytobrush (see Pap
smear flow chart). A wooden spatula should not be used.
When you agitate the instrument(s) in the
ThinPrep fluid you are trying to release as many cells as possible:cells
seem to stick less to the plastic than the wooden spatula. |
