If you are waiting for the result of a COVID-19 test from VCS Pathology, please read the information below.

  • Urgent specimens are processed within 24-48 hours.
  • We strive to report all non-urgent specimens within 5 working days. Please be aware that there may occasionally be delays due to overwhelming demand during testing blitz periods.
  • If you have a test on a weekend and your result has not come through by the end of the following Friday, please contact us.
  • Positive results will be provided by one of our pathologists by telephone.
  • Negative results will be sent by SMS.

Urgent Specimens

  • Urgent specimens are categorised into 3 priority groups in accordance with guidance from the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services. The referring clinician must indicate on the test request form if the patient is in one of these priority groups.
  • All other specimens are handled as non-urgent (5 working days).

Priority 1

    • Re-test/recollect specimens.
    • Specimens from close contacts of known positive cases or related to an outbreak.

Priority 2

    • Symptomatic health care workers and aged care workers.
    • Symptomatic aged care residents and hospital patients.

Priority 3

    • Symptomatic people identified to be from other at risk settings as determined by the referring clinician.

Results Hotline

  • If you or your patient meets the urgent priority criteria and you have not received a result after 48 hours, please contact us on the Results Hotline – (03) 9250 0300.
  • If you or your patient does not meet the urgent priority criteria, we request that you wait 5 working days before contacting the Results Hotline so that our clerical staff can attend to urgent telephone enquiries. We are currently receiving a high volume of tests; please be assured our laboratory staff are working to process tests and provide results as quickly as possible.
